A Florida woman is opening up about the trauma of losing her eye in a freak accident while walking her dog.
Daniella Abreu, 24, took her 60 pound husky named Blu for a nighttime walk on Aug. 7, 2023, and decided to opt for an old retractable leash because the rope leash she owned was too frayed. During the walk her dog saw a rabbit and lunged for it, and she gripped the leash tightly and pulled back, causing the handle of the retractable leash to hit her in her right eye .
“As he was running one way and I was pulling the opposite way, the friction of the leash just snapped back and repelled, hitting me right in my eye,” she told PEOPLE . “It happened so fast but I knew it was bad immediately. The force of the leash was so traumatic.”

Abreu, was bleeding so much she thought she lost her eye and ran home in a panic to her parents who were terrified by her condition. “Even though it may not have been a life or death situation, at that moment I obviously didn’t know. I knew it was a pretty severe situation though. I was losing a lot of blood and eventually I just passed out,” she recalls. “All the shock going through my body just overpowered the feeling.”
