105 mph, DUIs, and gang busts: Port St. Lucie police step up traffic patrols

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Speeding, DUIs, and dangerous driving have become all too common on Port St. Lucie roads, and police say they’ve had enough.

Since November, Chief Leo Niemczyk has ramped up enforcement, deploying officers to high-risk roadways and making traffic safety a top priority.

But it’s not just tickets and arrests—PSLPD is also calling drivers out on social media, posting photos of their latest stops in an effort to keep the community informed and deter bad behavior.

Just this week, Port St. Lucie police have made multiple DUI arrests, caught drivers reaching speeds over 100 mph, and even recovered drugs and guns—all during routine traffic stops.

  • DUI arrests on PSL Boulevard & Bayshore Boulevard: One driver was caught speeding at 70-mph, only to be arrested for DUI. Another blew twice the legal limit and had their car towed.
  • Triple-digit speeds on I-95: Officers stopped a driver hitting 105 mph in a 70-mph zone. Another driver was caught doing 78 in a 45.
  • Reckless driving leads to major drug bust: Two documented gang members were pulled over for weaving through traffic. Inside the car, officers found drugs, a firearm—and a baby bottle.
  • DUI with a child in the car: A concerned citizen called 911 after spotting a driver acting erratically with a child in the front seat. Officers pulled him over at a McDonald’s drive-thru—his BAC was nearly three times the legal limit.

Chief Niemczyk says these stops are part of a bigger trend…
