New maternity center may fill gap as Cleveland Clinic closes labor unit in Martin County

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Effective April 1, Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital will close its labor and delivery unit, leaving many mothers without local maternity care. However, the Martin County Healthy Start Coalition is working to build a community-based maternity center to fill that gap.

This is phase 1 of the project, as Martin County Healthy Start Coalition, CEO, Samantha Suffich said they’re going to need support from the county to make this happen. They’re currently negotiating a lease for 2.65 acres that’s adjacent to the South hospital in Stuart.

“We are asking them if we can enter into a conversation to do an option to lease that property and it would be a long term lease that would become the forever home of the Treasure Coast Maternity Center,” Suffice said.

The facility will offer prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum and neonatal care as well as mental health support and is anticipated to serve up to 700 woman per year, including 4 exam rooms, 6 birth suites, 2 recovery rooms and a lab…
