PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A recent rash of fake checks being cashed at businesses along the Treasure Coast landed one woman in jail and authorities are now trying to track down anyone who was working with her.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that Latoya Bennefield was arrested earlier this week for multiple crimes, including felony theft and being part of an organized scheme to defraud.
Bennefield is accused of going to check cashing businesses in St. Lucie and Indian River counties to cash bogus checks. Detectives noted that many of the phony checks used financial information taken from Oak Harbor Home Health, LLC, in Vero Beach…
