JUPITER, Fla. (CBS12) — Courtroom proceedings resumed on Wednesday in a case connected to a deadly Super Bowl Sunday shooting, with defense attorneys pushing to challenge crucial evidence.
Marcus Steward’s legal troubles stem from his alleged involvement in a Super Bowl Sunday triple murder in Jupiter on February 5, 2017. Authorities with the Jupiter Police Department (JPD) said Steward and another suspect, Christopher Vasata, were involved in the shootings of Kelli J. Doherty, Brandi El-Salhy, and Sean P. Henry. The victims were gathered around a backyard fire pit when masked gunmen opened fire.
He was arrested in November 2017 after DNA evidence linked him to the crime scene, according to Jupiter Police. Investigators recovered Steward’s DNA on a glove, hoodie, and part of a rifle found in a stolen vehicle abandoned along I-95. Two of Steward’s cellphones were also discovered in a BMW subleased to Vasata.
According to court records, in 2023, his attorney filed a motion to dismiss the charges on mental health grounds, arguing that Steward was unable to participate in his defense.
