Residents up in arms over fish kill

PORT ST. LUCIE — City residents living along the banks of the Elkcam Waterway lamented a fish kill during the third week of June that they believe was caused by the city’s longtime contractor, who is paid to kill weeds in the waterway.

Several of those residents addressed the City Council during public comment on June 23, demanding more information about the herbicide applied a week earlier and an investigation into what caused thousands of fish to die shortly afterward. For many years, Port St. Lucie has utilized the services of Riviera Beach-based Aquatic Vegetation Control to spray herbicide on its waterways.
