P&Z Board struggles with Johnston Road PUD

FORT PIERCE — The Planning & Zoning Commission here wrestled June 19 with a proposed planned unit development rezoning along Johnston Road that some members called a good compromise, but it failed to pass a recommendation of approval due to a pair of tie votes and a failed 2-4 vote. The commission majority ultimately voted to recommend denial simply to send a recommendation—any recommendation—to the County Commission.

Senior Planner Thad Crowe introduced the rezoning request that evening for the property located near the intersection of Angle Road and Kings Highway.

“This is just north of Angle Road and the Belcher Canal in an area that looks predominantly undeveloped but is changing over time with the various approved developments,” he said. “The future land use map shows this is the very southern fringe of the Towns, Villages & Countryside Future Land Use. The zoning is mostly ag, with kind of a holding category, because the TVC Future Land Use does allow for higher densities and intensities. The proposed zoning is PUD, from the current AR-1 and AG-1.”…
