MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A major change to Florida’s traffic laws that take effect Tuesday, July 1st is aimed at getting the most dangerous drivers off the road. A new state law targets extreme speeding, defined as driving more than 50 miles per hour over the speed limit or recklessly topping 100 miles per hour. It comes with harsher penalties, including jail time.
The “Dangerous Excessive Speeding” law, means if you’re caught going 50 miles over the speed limit, or driving more than 100 miles an hour recklessly, you could now be charged with a crime. “This law is long overdue,” Retired NYPD Sgt. Nick Vessio said.
Vessio said speeding isn’t just a bad habit, it’s a growing threat on Florida’s roads. “I’ll see on any given day, high speed weaving in and out. You know, there’s no reason to have to go 70, 80 miles an hour on US 1. The posted speed limit is 45,” Vessio said…
