Fort Pierce starts removing memorial plaques over legal, environmental concerns

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — The City of Fort Pierce began the process of removing memorial plaques and flowers from the rocks along Jetty Linear Park and its adjacent fishing pier, sparking a wave of nostalgia and concern among longtime residents.

For nearly four decades, families have placed plaques on the rocks to honor loved ones who frequently visited the park. But city officials say the displays violate an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which holds jurisdiction over the area.
