VERO BEACH — Olympic silver medalist Alex Giorgetti is leading an initiative to bring more awareness to water polo in Vero Beach—not just as a sport, but as a powerful tool for water safety and youth development.
Alongside co-founders Schummetta McLendon and Gianluigi Dellaccio, Giorgetti is working to introduce water polo to children who may not have access to traditional swimming programs or who come from communities disproportionately affected by drowning.
“Why not teach kids water safety through a sport like water polo?” Giorgetti asked when learning about the concerns from Black and Hispanic families in the area. That idea led to the creation of a nonprofit in April of last year.
