County permits first AG land farmer’s market

FORT PIERCE — St. Lucie County commissioners on Aug. 5 unanimously approved a conditional use permit for the county’s first farmers market allowed under recently amended zoning rules.

The Orange Avenue Growers Market will be built on 8.5 acres at 10485 Orange Ave., with three to four acres dedicated to the market. The 248,663-square-foot sales area will include 39 parking spaces, stormwater facilities, portable restrooms and a driveway from Orange Avenue.

The project is the first to benefit from last year’s land development code changes, proposed by property owner Cheri G. Surloff, that allow agricultural-zoned farmers markets to sell products from multiple farms. Ordinance 2426 limits such markets to three days a week and prohibits nonagricultural goods such as crafts or clothing…
