Red Cross volunteer, educator, world traveler: Gloria Meyer celebrates 107th birthday

JUPITER, Fla. (CBS12) — Gloria Meyer has lived through world wars, sailed on 55 cruises, and taught generations of students, and on Wednesday, she celebrated her 107th birthday in Jupiter.

Longtime Jupiter resident, Gloria, celebrated her 107th birthday on Wednesday surrounded by friends, family, and fellow residents at Mangrove Bay Senior Living Community.

CBS12 Photographer Chris Pollock was there when the celebration kicked off, and the guests enjoyed cake, music, and stories from a life that spanned more than a century. The senior living community said Meyer is known for her sharp wit, warm spirit, and remarkable life experiences — from volunteering with the Red Cross during World War II to traveling the globe on more than 50 cruises.

The senior living community said Gloria was born in Iowa in 1918, and she was one of the first women deployed to the Philippines during WWII, often stationed just behind the retreating Japanese Army. After the war, she became an English department head, married a fellow educator, and spent decades teaching high school students. Her travels took her everywhere from Jerusalem during the Six-Day War to the decks of cruise ships across the world…
