Jon’s Pawns keeps chess in play

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — “I don’t know if I’d say I’m the one keeping chess alive here. I think everyone keeps the chess community alive the more they play, connect in person, or challenge friends online. It’s really about community,” said Jonathan Brackett, when asked if he was the one responsible for sustaining the local chess scene.

“Chess is bigger than it’s ever been, and it’s only growing. We have kids becoming masters at 10 years old. It’s a movement right now,” he added.

Brackett is the owner and founder of Jon’s Pawns, a chess instruction nonprofit based within the Treasure Coast area. His mission is to share his passion for the traditional board game with anyone who wants to learn, not just how to play, but why it matters…
