MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A tractor-trailer hauling cars reportedly made an unsafe U-turn while traveling northbound on U.S. 1 in Martin County near Hobe Sound, causing the cab of the truck to get stuck in dirt and blocking southbound lanes of traffic.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) said the incident happened at 9:10am Thursday. According to the FHP, the semi-truck driver is Richard McGhie, 60, of Ft. Lauderdale. He was ticketed by MCSO for unsafe U-turn, which carries a $163.00 fine. He was hauling vehicles from Boston to Ft. Lauderdale and he made a U-turn to go south at a designated spot where U-turns are allowed. U.S. 1 in that area is four lanes wide, two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound. The speed limit there is 45 mph.
The southbound lanes of U.S.1 were blocked from about 9:10 until 11:15 while workers with a tow truck attempted to remove the semi from the roadway. The tires on the cab portion of the truck had become stuck in soft dirt on the side of the road. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office says no one was injured…
