STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — A routine traffic enforcement stop turned into a lifesaving intervention after a Martin County Sheriff’s deputy discovered a woman allegedly under the influence — passed out behind the wheel with two unrestrained children in the backseat.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) said one of its deputies was patrolling the Stuart Causeway Bridge when he noticed a vehicle stopped at the top of the bridge. The car was running, in drive, with the emergency brake engaged—suggesting the driver may have fallen asleep mid-traffic.
Inside, deputies found 37-year-old Abbie Lynn Schagrin unconscious at the wheel. MCSO said a crack pipe was in plain view beside her. In the backseat, a toddler and an infant were asleep and unrestrained.
Deputies safely removed the children and secured Schagrin, who MCSO determined to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She was taken to a hospital for observation before being booked into the Martin County Jail…
