Martin County warns pet seekers of rising puppy and kitten scams on Facebook

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Thinking of adding a cute puppy or kitten to your fur-ever family? Martin County deputies are warning pet seekers to do their homework — or risk falling for a scam.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of puppy and kitten adoption scams that have been circulating on Facebook. Deputies say at that least six of their residents have fallen victim to the scam by paying deposits for animals they never received.

The sheriff’s office reports that these scammers will steal photos from legitimate breeders and create Facebook pages advertising puppies and kittens that are available for adoption. Deputies warn the accounts are new and that the scammers will post multiple times on the same date…
