Two women found dead in submerged car near Fort Pierce; FHP investigating

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies and Florida Highway Patrol state troopers responded Tuesday morning to a car found submerged in a canal near the intersection of Orange Avenue and North Rim Ditch Road, about 13 miles west of Fort Pierce. The discovery prompted a road closure and a multi-agency investigation.

According to FHP, workers with the South Florida Water Management District spotted the vehicle around 10:50 a.m. while performing maintenance near the canal. The car, a Nissan Sentra rental with Mississippi license plates, was found with the bodies of two adult women in the backseat. The women are identified as Tatiana Licona, 28, of Vero Beach and Destiny Taylor, 21, of Ft. Pierce.

According to FHP, the two women — who were dating — had been at a bar called Speak Easy in Vero Beach and were on their way to home of the grandfather of one of the victims.

They were westbound on Orange Avenue when their car veered off the road, struck a guardrail and then went back onto the road, hit a guardrail on the other side of the road and plunged into a canal sometime after midnight on Monday morning. The FHP says alcohol was likely a factor in the double-fatal accident…
