In a completely novel development for search and rescue operations, Florida’s Martin County Sheriff’s Office has welcomed an unprecedented new team member: Splash, the nation’s first search and rescue recovery otter. The 2-year-old Asian small-clawed otter is making history alongside his trainer, Micheal Hadsell of Peace River K9 Search and Rescue, as they pioneer a new approach to aquatic recovery missions.
During a demonstration at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Splash showcased specialized scent detection abilities that could prove invaluable in water-based search operations. While dogs have long been the gold standard for search and rescue work on land, Splash’s unique aquatic skills may fill a critical gap in water recovery efforts.
“We were all extremely excited to welcome Splash and Mr. Hadsell to MCSO,” the sheriff’s office announced on social media, sharing photos of their diminutive but skilled new partner.
Deputies emphasized that Splash’s specialized training makes him a “remarkable asset” for locating missing persons in bodies of water, scenarios that often present some of the most challenging environmental conditions for traditional search teams.
