Florida deputies recover victim’s $17K from Uber after fraud scheme

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Detectives with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office recovered $17,000 on Monday after it was taken from a victim as part of a fraud scheme.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations detectives intercepted a vehicle carrying the money with help from West Palm Beach Police and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives said, the suspect contacted the victim using a spoofed Chase Bank phone number and convinced him there was fraudulent activity on his account.

After multiple calls, detectives said that the victim was instructed to withdraw $17,000 so the FBI could secure the funds in a new account. The schemer then arranged for the victim to place the cash in a vehicle, which was driven out of Martin County before MCSO detectives later located it…
