Fort Pierce planning board backs Okeechobee/I-95 residential development

FORT PIERCE — The Fort Pierce Planning Board voted 4-1 Nov. 10 to recommend rezoning a 50-acre site at the intersection of I-95 and Okeechobee Road so Pulte Homes can build 250 single-family homes on land currently zoned commercial.

Assistant Planning Director Chris Suneson outlined the proposal at 2721 S. Jenkins Road. “This request is for a zoning atlas amendment to change the classification from general commercial to planned development with an associated master plan,” he said. “The project includes a variety of home sizes and amenities, including a linear park connecting a recreational area to a pocket park and buffering from I-95.”

The site was originally approved in 2008 for a 383,605-square-foot commercial plaza anchored by Target, but the Great Recession shelved the project. The Planning Board first reviewed the residential proposal nearly a year ago. Suneson explained updates to the phasing plan now include the school bus stop and cross-access agreement in Phase 1, along with HUD and FDOT noise guidelines…
