MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Communities across the Treasure Coast took part on January 29 in a required, one-day count of people experiencing homelessness, a process officials say helps guide services and federal funding, even though it captures only a snapshot in time.
The annual Point-in-Time Count took place Thursday across Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties. Volunteers, service providers, and law enforcement fanned out early in the morning to look for people living unsheltered, conduct brief surveys, and share information about available resources.
“This is just a point in time, it’s a snapshot of what’s happening that particular day,” said Michelle Miller, human services director for Martin County. “The numbers that come out of the PIT count don’t reflect actual numbers of homelessness in any of our counties.”…
