Medical emergency at FHP training ends in line-of-duty death of trooper

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS12) — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper died Wednesday after suffering a medical emergency during a competitive training process at the agency’s academy, officials confirmed.

Trooper Michael Diego, who joined the agency in 2021 as part of the 149th Recruit Class, fell ill on February 18 while participating in the selection process for the Patrol’s Criminal Interdiction Unit, according to FHP.
