FORT PIERCE – The Fort Pierce City Commission has allowed a state of emergency declaration surrounding extensive beach erosion on South Hutchinson Island to expire.
But officials said the “war with Mother Nature” over keeping ocean surf from carving away sand dunes near structures and roads will continue to be closely scrutinized.
City Manager Richard Chess said Tuesday 95 percent of the tons of replenishing sand that had been dumped by city and St. Lucie County workers as of Friday remain on the dunes. But officials acknowledged recent high winds already have eroded about 15 feet of the new sand deposits…
