‘Only a test’: Sirens to sound at St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant on Thursday at noon

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla (CBS12) — Residents near the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant should not be alarmed when the facility’s outdoor warning sirens sound at noon Thursday, March 5. The test is part of the plant’s routine quarterly safety checks.

Martin County’s Emergency Management Agency, the St. Lucie County Department of Public Safety, and Florida Power & Light will activate all 91 sirens within the plant’s 10-mile emergency planning zone. Officials say the 1,132-acre St. Lucie site, located on Hutchinson Island along A1A between Stuart and Fort Pierce, houses two nuclear units.

Each siren will sound for about one minute. Before and after the test, a message will broadcast through the sirens’ public address system stating, “This is only a test.” Siren tests occur in March, June, September, and December to make sure the system functions properly and to maintain public awareness…
