MARTIN COUNTY – A 72-year-old Colorado neurosurgeon was booked into Indian River County Jail on March 7 on multiple charges of attempted murder, stemming from a shooting on March 2 at the intersection of 12th Street and Commerce Avenue near Vero Beach, according to jail records.
Thomas Earl Steffens of Grand Junction, Colorado, was shot four times near the railroad tracks at 12th Street at about 8:30 p.m., on March 2 by deputies after Steffens fired at officers from his car, officials said. Steffens fired a gun at three Indian River County deputies, a Martin County deputy and a U.S. Marshal, all part of a task force which was tracking Steffens on an outstanding warrant out of Colorado for sexual assault charges.
