Federal investigators hunt for sensitive military equipment after Portland smash-and-grab theft

PORTLAND, Ore. — KGW has obtained federal court records that reveal a months-long hunt by Army investigators for stolen military equipment, including sensitive survival radios capable of reaching soldiers anywhere on earth. Details of the investigation have not previously been reported.

On October 29, 2025, three U.S. Army soldiers checked into a hotel in downtown Portland while on a two-day mission to return a helicopter to Oregon. Their rental vehicle, loaded with tens of thousands of dollars in military gear, sat in the rear parking lot of the Moxy Hotel.

Sometime overnight, someone smashed the rear window and cleaned out the vehicle…
