PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — As Waymo continues mapping Portland, city leaders are weighing how they would regulate the self-driving car company.
At a Portland City Council Public Works Committee Meeting on Tuesday, staff with the transportation bureau presented seven different policy concepts that officials could implement if robotaxis begin service locally. The proposals include enforcing a cap on the number of driverless vehicles allowed within city limits, and requiring companies to test-drive across at least 50,000 miles before applying for a “for-hire” autonomous vehicle permit.
Although Waymo hasn’t fully launched its robotaxis in Portland quite yet, the business revealed in April that its human drivers would begin testing the area.
