A Portland church sold 5 acres. Soon, 52 affordable homes will rise there

Facing a line of orange-vested volunteers, a construction crew member issued instructions for how to lift a wall into place.

Volunteers from Gov. Tina Kotek’s office and the state housing finance agency readied themselves as the crew member, with homebuilder Habitat for Humanity, ordered, “One, two, three, lift!”

As one, the state brass obeyed, hoisting the wall to separate two townhomes in Habitat’s largest Oregon development yet: 52 homes for 230 people in Southwest Portland’s leafy Hillsdale neighborhood…
