PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A demonstration held outside the Portland Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility is highlighting what organizers describe as modern parallels to World War II-era internment camps in the U.S.
“Never again is now” was one of the many slogans on signs held by demonstrators as part of an event called Oregon Peace Pilgrimage to End Family Detention.
In the summer of 1942, Portland had its own temporary detention center where nearly 3,700 Japanese people and their families were forced to live in deplorable conditions for several months.
