An RV and a shed went up in flames on the 100 block of SE 124th Avenue late Sunday night, and the fire spread fast enough to ignite grass fires nearby before crews got it under control. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
Portland Fire & Rescue said it was on scene battling the RV and shed fire just after 1 am, according to a statement from Portland Fire & Rescue. The fire appears to have started the surrounding grass fires, the department said, though officials have not yet determined what sparked the blaze in the first place. By the time crews posted their update, all fires were under control, with companies working to extinguish remaining hot spots.
The 100 block of SE 124th Avenue falls within the response area of Station 7 at 1500 SE 122nd Avenue, which serves as the primary fire response unit for the Hazelwood and Mill Park neighborhoods, according to the City of Portland. The station is one of the city’s busiest, housing both standard engine and truck crews alongside a regional hazardous materials team.
A Region Already on High Alert for Fire Danger
The fire broke out under conditions that have kept Portland fire officials on edge all summer. The city has been under a strict summer burn ban since mid-June, prohibiting recreational campfires, fire pits, yard debris burning, and other open flames due to dry conditions and elevated fire danger, per the city’s fire marshal and the Multnomah County Fire Defense Board.
