PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Multnomah County will use a Northeast Portland motel as housing for families facing homelessness.
With a unanimous vote on Thursday, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to reserve a block of rooms at 4911 NE 82nd Ave. — also known as the Studio 6 motel. It will now serve as the Northeast Family Shelter as well, providing housing for adults who care for minor children and for residents who are in their third trimester of pregnancy.

The new agreement comes after officials previously made one agreement with another motel owner in Gresham, according to Chair Jessica Vega Pederson. Multnomah County’s Homeless Services Department Director Nathaniel VerGow later claimed the shelter is no longer slated to open “due to a financial situation specific to hotel ownership,” despite efforts from officials.
“Oregon as a state has one of the highest rates of family homelessness in the country,” Pederson said. “Understanding that homeless families were relying on shelter capacity expansion, HSD and [the Department of County Assets] moved as quickly as possible to find alternative options for a longer-term site.”…
