‘Several hundred needles’: Trash dumpers, dumpster divers overwhelm SE Portland thrift shop

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A nonprofit is dealing with a messy situation in Southeast Portland.

Books, shoes, clothes, even sporting goods and furniture can be found at the Saint Vincent de Paul thrift shop off of Southeast Powell Boulevard near 174th. All making its way to the store through donations, the money going towards bettering the community. But a few bad actors are coming in at night and leaving piles of trash.

“Maybe not overwhelm us by making their problems our problems,” said Matteo Fusco, the manager at the store. “Car tires, mattresses, moldy clothes, mail, junk mail, just a host of items that are in terrible shape. Literal trash bags, just, you know, looked like someone’s kitchen trash bag.”
