Salt & Straw sues Ruby Jewel over taco deal

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Salt & Straw has sued fellow Portland ice cream maker Ruby Jewel, alleging the company plans to stop making its Tacolate ice cream tacos in breach of a three-year manufacturing deal.

The complaint, filed Oct. 5 in Multnomah County Circuit Court seeks more than $1 million in damages along with court orders requiring Ruby Jewel to keep producing the tacos through February 2028 or through a transition to a new maker.

Salt & Straw launched The Tacolate in 2023 after Klondike stopped making its chocolate ice cream taco in 2022. Salt & Straw says it co-developed custom equipment with a maker in Poland and later signed a co-packing deal with Ruby Jewel on Feb. 25, 2025, to make the tacos at Ruby Jewel’s Portland plant…
