Tensions remain as Washington County prepares to open Aloha ‘pod village’

Neighborhood tensions linger as Washington County prepares to open a temporary housing site in Aloha.

Planned to be up and running by Monday, Feb. 5, the “Safe Rest Village” will offer immediate shelter to 30 individuals through the use of pallet shelters in the parking lot of the Aloha United Methodist Church.

The site is the third pod village in Washington County, joining temporary housing sites in both Cornelius and Hillsboro . It will also be Aloha’s only temporary housing shelter.

“It is really crucial and critical to have this site up and running. It is the only site in Aloha that offers the services; the only shelter in Aloha,” Amber Johnson, a program director for site operator Open Door HousingWorks, said Feb. 2. “The need here is to get these folks off of the streets and into some stability with providing the shelter services where they can transition into long-term housing moving forward.”

Similar to other Washington County pod villages, the site will offer temperature-controlled pallet shelters to protect people from harsh weather conditions.
