PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — If you’ve been driving around with expired license plate tags there could be a ticket in your not-too-distant future.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation is looking for ways to make up some of the $32 million shortfall in their budget. One of those ways is more enforcement about parking and license tags.
“Out of the 1 million vehicles registered in Portland, there are an estimated 460,000 that are eligible for renewal,” PBOT Director Millicent Williams told KOIN 6 News.
That’s right — nearly half of drivers in the region have expired license tags.

City parking patrols have the authority to hand out a ticket for expired tags and will step up that process now.
There is no more grace period for tag renewals as there was during the pandemic. Williams said the city could collect millions of dollars in fines and use the money for many street projects, fixing roads, snow and ice removal, improving intersections and, not coincidentally, paying for the ticket writers.
