Oregon boys ages 13 and 14 arrested in theft of car with 2-year-old inside

Portland police arrested two teenage boys in the theft of a Subaru Outback that had been left running in the driveway of a Northeast Portland home with a 2-year-old girl in the backseat in November.

Officers arrested a 13-year-old boy on Thursday on allegations of second-degree kidnapping, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and first-degree robbery, police said. They arrested a 14-year-old boy last week on suspicion of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, they said.

Police did not publicly identify either teen. Multnomah County juvenile authorities did not immediately say if the boys are in custody.

Detectives used cellphone records to track down the boys, who are accused of stealing the Subaru from a home near Northeast Halsey Street and 126th Avenue about 7:15 a.m. on Nov. 30.

A neighbor spotted the toddler crying and walking barefoot nearby about 10 minutes later and flagged down a police officer. The girl’s father picked her up and took her home.

A Gresham police officer later that day spotted the dark blue 2017 Subaru Outback near Southeast Morrison Terrace and 202nd Avenue, but no suspects were in the car, Portland police said.
