Following a severe ice storm in January, a warming center was set up in the Northeast Portland State Office Building. The center, managed by Jeff Gilbert from the Oregon Department of Human Services, provided shelter and support for around 170 people from January 12-16.

One of the individuals Gilbert assisted was a woman who came to the center with her cat, Julius Caesar. The woman was scheduled for a two-week medical treatment, but the facility did not allow pets and she had no one to look after Julius Caesar.

Despite initial challenges, Gilbert was determined to find a solution. Animal shelters were full and most veterinary clinics were closed due to the weather. However, when Carla Burns from the ODHS Mass Care Response Team arrived at the center, she offered to take Julius Caesar into her home.

This solution eased the woman’s worries, which could positively affect her recovery. When the warming center closed, the woman went for her treatment and Julius Caesar was taken to Burns’ home. The cat has adjusted well to his new surroundings, and his owner checks on him regularly. This incident highlights the importance of compassion and kindness during difficult times.
