Federal government awards Vancouver $17.5 million for Heights District Project

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The federal government has awarded the City of Vancouver $17.5 million, which will help fund the city’s Heights District Project — a $30 million plant to replace the 63-acre Tower Mall property with 1,300 affordable and market-rate housing units, retail space, and new infrastructure that includes streets, bike paths, sidewalks and a park.

The city announced that the funding will go toward building two segments of the project’s “Grand Loop.” The loop will extend Blandford Drive past MacArthur Boulevard, into the Vanco Golf Range and back around Devine Road. The two-way street will include a linear park along one side of the roadway.

Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle called the loop the “central feature” of the project.

“The development of The Heights District is vital to the future of Vancouver, and the Grand Loop is a central feature,” McEnerny-Ogle said. “Being awarded a grant of this magnitude will enable us to construct part of the new street network, which is a key piece of infrastructure within the former Tower Mall site that will support the first phase of development and bring much-needed affordable housing to the community.”
