Vancouver native, OSU student join Olympic gymnastics team alongside Biles

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Two athletes with connections to Oregon and Washington will join decorated gymnast Simone Biles at the Paris Olympics.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for gymnastics were held at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn. over the weekend. Late on Sunday, the national team announced the individuals who were selected for the artistic, rhythmic and trampoline rosters.

Oregon State University student Jade Carey and Vancouver, Wash., native Jordan Chiles were appointed to the women’s artistic team.

Phoenix-born Carey “topped the two-vault standings” during this year’s team trials. At the summer 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, she won a gold medal for women’s floor exercise.

Also at the Tokyo 2020 games, Chiles — who trains alongside Biles at the World Champions Centre in Texas — secured a silver medal for artistic gymnastics. Over the weekend, Chiles secured the third spot in the all-around competition.
