Bryan Butcher Jr., a seventh grade algebra teacher at Beaumont Middle School, was named Oregon’s Teacher of the Year at a surprise ceremony Wednesday. Butcher, who has taught math at the Northeast Portland middle school for the last eight years, walked into the school’s gymnasium to cheers from well over 100 students. He looked bashful but pleased as he waved to the crowd and his extended family, who sat in the bleachers.
