Gresham High School: 80% of students absent Friday, two athletic events canceled

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Gresham High School officials said 80% percent of students were absent on Friday and two athletic events were canceled.

This comes one day after student walkouts happened on Thursday in a demonstration calling for improved campus safety following a recent gun scare.

The Gresham-Barlow School District confirmed to KOIN 6 News via email the low school attendance.

“At Gresham High School today, out of 1,650 students enrolled, 1,330 were absent,” a Gresham-Barlow School District spokesperson said. “The GHS football and girls varsity soccer games were canceled tonight.”

The cancelations were due to the “low student-athlete attendance” at school, officials said.

“GHS is working with the other schools and the OSAA to determine next steps,” the spokesperson said.

The administration of Gresham High School, and the Gresham-Barlow School District in general, have been under scrutiny by students and parents lately. At a Gresham-Barlow School Board meeting this week, many community members said they thought school officials communicated poorly to them and failed to act swiftly during an incident involving a student bringing a gun into school last month .
