Irish man arrested in Budapest ‘on suspicion of murder’ of missing American woman

An Irish man has been arrested in Hungary on suspicion of murdering 31 -year-old American woman, Mackenzie Michalski. The 37-year old-suspect was apprehended outside an apartment complex on Friday after being identified from CCTV footage.

Ms. Michalski, a nurse practitioner from Portland, Oregon, is believed to have been holidaying in Hungary at the time of her death. Hungarian media reports suggest that alarm bells were raised when she failed to return to her Airbnb accommodation and missed a flight she had booked from Hungary to Amsterdam.

A GoFundMe page titled ‘Bring Mackenzie Michalski Home’ was set up by friends on Friday and has so far amassed €34,000 ($36,000). Ms. Michalski, a high school graduate from Fredonia, New York, will be remembered at a candlelit vigil scheduled for Saturday evening.

Confirming the arrest of an Irish man in connection with Ms. Michalski’s death, Hungarian police said: “The Budapest Police Headquarters has listed a 31-year-old American woman as missing, who came to Hungary as a tourist and disappeared from a Budapest nightclub on November 5, 2024.”
