USPS driver catches alleged mail thieves stealing packages, 2 arrested

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Deputies in Washington County arrested two people who are accused of stealing mail and packages, and it’s a USPS mail carrier who helped track down those suspects.

Detectives say this is connected to a weeks-long investigation they’d been doing, involving a stolen or counterfeit USPS postal box key that key gave access to mailboxes in the Cedar Mill and Bethany areas.

On Thursday, the mail carrier, while on their delivery route, spotted two people in a white Subaru Crosstrek stealing mail and packages, officials said.

Deputies arrested 24-year-old Brandon Rummerfield of Portland and 31-year-old Michael Fischer of Battle Ground.

Both men face several charges, including mail theft and identity theft.

“The investigation is ongoing, and many victims have not yet been notified. Additional charges may be forthcoming,” officials said.
