Beaverton schools keeping eye on neighboring Portland’s new school cellphone policy

The Beaverton School District is taking notice of Portland Public School’s decision to ban cellphone usage at all its district schools, beginning fall 2025.

The Portland Public School’s board voted 5-2 on Tuesday, Jan. 7, to keep student cellphone and personal electronic devices turned off, even during lunch periods. In Beaverton, plans for a new policy are in the works, including thought to what neighboring schools are implementing.

Teachers have argued that they need to teach and not spend a lot of time telling students to put their phones away. But many students, on the other hand, say phones are needed during lunch periods…
