Portland housing voucher agency got 7 applications for every opening — and that’s just for the waitlist

The Portland-area housing authority told The Oregonian/OregonLive it received nearly 21,000 applications for its Housing Choice Voucher Program after it opened its waitlists last week for the first time in nearly two years.

But there’s only room for up to 3,000 new housing voucher program applicants to be added at random through a lottery system, according to Home Forward.

The waitlist for the federal housing voucher program, which assists low-income tenants in paying rent and is often referred to as Section 8, opened from April 15 to April 21, the first time since June 2023. Before that, it’d been almost seven years…
