PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — They’re bold. They’re big. They’re impossible to look away from. You’ve probably seen lion dancers at a Lunar New Year celebration in Portland, but there is more to lion dancing than meets the eye.
White Lotus Lion Dance is a local group that’s breathing new life into an ancient tradition, fusing heritage, heart and high-level competition. Leader and co-founder Nhan Danh told KOIN 6 News they’ve been performing since 2015 with the goal to make lion dancing more popular at celebrations throughout the year.
From the powerful movements and heavy lifting, lion dancing is more than a show. It’s a celebration of culture and community in Portland.
