‘It’s not just criminals’: Newberg vineyard workers shocked after ICE arrests

NEWBERG, Ore. (KOIN) – Two ICE arrests of vineyard workers in Newberg are sending shockwaves through the community.

Moises Sotelo, the owner of Novo Start Vineyard Service, was one of the two arrested. According to Sotelo’s family, he was moved to Tacoma, Washington, after spending Thursday in the ICE facility in Portland.

Victoria Reader works for Sotelo at Novo Start. Now she said it is stressful trying to figure out how to plan, prepare, and talk with employees. But she admitted this is not something one can prepare for.

“I’ve given the option to my employees if they want to show up or not,” she said. “I actually didn’t have anybody work today. Because it felt, like I said, very targeted. And I just wanted to keep everybody safe… We have the work. But I’m not going to force anybody to work if they’re not safe.”…
