PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — In 1865, June 19 was the day that enslaved African people in Galveston, Texas, learned they had actually been declared free with the 1863 passage of the Emancipation Proclamation.
One hundred sixty years later, Black people throughout the U.S. still mark the day — dubbed “Juneteenth” — in remembrance of their joint history and their ancestors’ resilience. Here are several Portland events commemorating the holiday.
