I was one of the thousands of participants holding onto an original sign at the “No Kings” protest in Portland, (“Tens of thousands join peaceful ‘No Kings’ protest in Portland; much smaller crowd turns chaotic at ICE facility,” June 14). Mingling with the diverse, friendly and knowledgeable crowd made me feel better. I felt some hope and less anxiety.
The speeches and signs focused on the multitude of present ills practiced by the current administration. People were mad and discouraged – rightfully so.
Walking home though, a different wave of thinking overtook me. There is so much I am grateful for in the United States. I wanted to link arms with others and sing “This Land is Your Land,” and perhaps study the Pledge of Allegiance. I could learn George Washington’s Farewell Address and re-read Amanda Gorman’s inaugural poem…
