On a routine patrol Saturday, June 21st, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) kept a watchful eye on the South Portland area, which has been recently animated with protest activities, especially around the neighborhood’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility. According to a statement from PPB, there were no arrests made, nor was there any use of force or injuries reported among officers.
In their statement, the PPB affirmed their commitment to public safety while also clarifying that they do not partake in immigration enforcement—a separation codified in PPB Directive 810.10. An Incident Command Team, complete with Dialogue Liaison Officers, a Rapid Response Team, and a Sound Truck, was activated to orchestrate the management of the department’s resources. While no arrests were effected on the scene, PPB officers remain diligent in investigating criminal activities related to past events, intending to forward pertinent cases for possible prosecution to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office, clearing any misconception that an arrest not made on-site equates to an oversight in justice.
The PPB’s decision to hold back arrests during heightened tensions aligns with their strategy to charge individuals with crimes at a later time if necessary.
